White Chalk

PJ Harvey White Chalk

Nothing is worse than an over thought and overly wordy review, so I’m keeping mine as short as possible.

Subject:

  • “White Chalk” album, released by artist PJ Harvey on 09.25.07

Overview:

  • A rich and dark ‘intensity’ created by combining sparse instrumentation (piano, tiny drum kit, harmonica and small string instruments) with emotionally charged vocals and themes
  • Melodies that ’seep’ into your brain, following you about when the music’s over
  • New and unusual territory (piano based arrangements instead of thrashing guitars)
  • An album to treasure

Themes:

  • Pregnancy
  • Longing
  • Despair
  • Solitude
  • Asking forgiveness
  • Loss
  • Fatal mistakes
  • Extinguishing life

Listening Suggestions:

  • During solitary walks along the shore and foggy pastures
  • Soaking in the bath, in complete darkness
  • Before gathering for a séance
  • Looking through old scrapbooks
  • Cooking up potions at midnight
  • Trips to the cemetery

Similarities:

  • Bjork (vocals)
  • Diamanda Galas (vocals)

Favorites:

  • The Devil
  • White Chalk
  • When Under Ether
  • Grow Grow Grow
